Garmin Cyprus Troodos Marathon 42KM
RACE DATE: 09 June 2019
START – FINISH: The race starts at 05.30 on Sunday the 9th of June 2019 from Troodos central square, follows a circular route and finishes at the same place.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: No requirements.
PARTICIPATION COST: is EUR40.
REGISTRATION PERIOD: Until 2nd of June 2019.
RACE DISTANCE: The race distance is 42,2km.
ELEVATION: The race elevation is +1340m total ascent.
CUT-OFF: The race is ideal for experienced trail runners, aged 18 years old and above, who can finish the race within the cut-off time of 9 hours.
RACE ROUTE INFORMATION:
In total the route goes through 32 km of natural trails (Atalante, Kampos tou Livadiou, Mnimata Episkopon, Kannoures, Artemis), 3 km asphalt road, 1,2 km through ski routes and 6 km through forest road. The start and finish will be at Troodos square at an altitude of 1724 m.
After the start of the race the runners will cross the main Troodos – Prodromos road heading north, then through the parking place and into the Atalante trail. After about 1,5 km the runners will reach the forest road where they will make a right hand turn into this road ending up at the 2,5 km on the main Troodos – Karvounas road (asphalt).
Thereafter, the runner follow a downhill direction towards Karvounas, where in the 3 rd km a natural spring is found – a fountain of drinking water, and 200 m further they will reach the on their left hand side the entrance to 3 trails. The runners enter the Mnimara Episkopon trail (trail No 2), whose 1 st km is also part of the Kampos tou Livadiou trail (trail No 1).
Reaching the 7,2 km point, the runners will pass through a check point at an altitude of 1680 m. Following a sharp downhill course and at some parts near the mountain edge (special caution is advised) with a view into the river Chromios, of Soleas valley and the gulf of Morfou. At the 10 th km there is a natural spring (with a hose of drinking water).
The trails leads into a forest road which connects Platania and Ayios Nicolaos at the 12,5 km point, where the first refuelling station will be found and a check point at an altitude of 1004 m. The runners follow a direction towards Ayios Nicolaos where at the 14,5 km they will pass by the trout fish farm and at the 15,5 km point at 865 m of altitude (the race’s lowest altitude) by the Ayios Nikolaos drinking water factory.
Following this, there will be a 500 m slight uphill route on asphalt road where the runners will reach the 16 th km and the first cut-off time check point – 2hours 30min at an altitude of 905m, in the entrance of Ayios Nicolaos – Kannaoures trail. A 2,5 km with an incline of 10 – 15% follows. At the 18,5 km point the runners will find the second refuelling station and a check point at an altitude of 1118m.
Then, the runners will enter a narrow downhill path for about 1,2 km and by the 19,7 km point they will reach Karkotis river. The river water is potable. From this point (1052m of altitude) up to the 24 th km (1620m of altitude), the runners will follow an uphill route with a big incline next to the river. The pathway leads into a forest road where at the 24,5 km point the runners will reach the main Karvounas – Troodos road.
At this point the runners will follow the same route as the during the first 2,5 km of the race in an opposite direction leading up to the 27,2 km in the parking area across from the starting point of the race. The third refuelling station may be found there and the second cut-off time check point of 6 hours at an altitude of 1730m. The runners will make a right hand turn into the main Troodos – Prodromos road.
At the 28,4 km the runners will turn left into forest road where in about 500 m they will reach the entrance of Artemis natural path. At the 30 th km (1852 m altitude) the fourth refuelling station will be found followed by a 300 m downhill asphalt road where after a left hand turn they will be running in parts of the Artemis pathway. In about 500 m the runners will find on their left the ski routes (connection piste1- Hera).
High incline of uphill part will follow for 700m, which leads the runners to the top of Olympus at an altitude of 1952 m, Cyprus’ highest point. At this point the runners will be at the 31,5 th km of the race and will cross a check point. A sudden downhill for about 500 m will follow (caution should be used) from north face b piste. The runners passing on their right the ski centre they will end up on an asphalt road where in 200 m they will come across the entrance of Atalante pathway.
At this point the fifth refuelling station will be found at the 32,2 km mark. The route continues into Atalante trail for about 9,8 km up to the finish in Troodos square. The Atalante trail does not have significant altitude changes but it is very technical. At the 38km the runners will come across the sixth and final refuelling station. At this point the runners will pass through the final check point at an altitude of 1749m. At the 39 th km there is a natural spring with drinking water.
